Irakli Beraia, the head of the defence and security committee in the Georgian parliament from the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Friday called “disgraceful” to the country’s fourth president Giorgi Margvelashvili for his recent claims on the potential aid of Georgian troops to Russia in its war against Ukraine.

“This is a disgraceful statement of a disgraceful person, who insulted the Georgian state, the Georgian army, the memory of the heroes who had died in the fight for the unity of Georgia, and their families. He insulted the citizens of Georgia and also the institution of the president”, Beraia said

The MP stressed the former supreme commander-in-chief had “directly and openly discredited” the country’s defence forces, adding the former president “must at least ask pardon for his words”.

Speaking for the TV Pirveli channel on Wednesday, Margvelashvili said it “seemed realistic” to him the Georgian government to encourage the country’s troops to fight in Ukraine against the country.

“To what I expect even more difficult and unacceptable is the direct assistance of the Georgian Government to Russia in the conflict against Ukraine”, Margvelashvili said.
