The head of Parliament’s European Integration Committee from the ruling Georgian Dream party Maka Bochorishvili says that the EU member states are not unanimous for now whether or not to grant Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova a candidate country status, following the bid of the counties’ earlier this year.

Bochorishvili said on Monday that the Georgian Dream authorities “are doing their utmost to ensure the status,” noting that “unfortunately,  some of our compatriots are campaigning against this.”

“Of course, until we know the final decision, we will do our best to explain to our European partners what expectations Georgia and the Georgian society have. More than 80% of the public supports Georgia’s integration into the European Union. The EU member states and the European community should be also well aware of this,” Bochorishvili said.

She stated that every politician, no matter of their political view, should now be interested in the country’s success, adding that Georgia “has done much over years and deserves the status.”

Georgia applied for EU membership on March 3 and submitted a self-assessment questionnaire on May 10, answering more than 2,800 questions on the country’s compatibility with EU standards.

The EU is expected to decide on the candidate country status, a step prior to final membership, next month.
