Vladimer Chachibaia, an MP of the ruling Georgian Dream party and former defence official, on Thursday criticized the country’s fourth president Giorgi Marvelashvili for making “discrediting” claims on Georgian troops’ potential aid to Russia in its war against Ukraine.
The MP said by the statement, the former president who served as the country’s commander-in-chief, had accused the country’s government and its armed forces of “betrayal” and “insulted them”.
Speaking with the TV Pirveli channel on Wednesday, Margvelashvili said it “seemed realistic” to him the Georgian government to encourage the country’s troops to fight in Ukraine against the country.
“To what I expect even more difficult and unacceptable is the direct assistance of the Georgian Government to Russia in the conflict against Ukraine”, Margvelashvili said.
Opposition MP Aleko Elisashvili, who fought in Ukraine for some time, also criticized Margvelashvili for his comments by saying “how can one say the Georgian army will fight on the side of Russia? How can a Georgian say this?”.
