The ruling Georgian Dream party and the opposition have exchanged allegations after the killing of the country’s citizen by the Russian-controlled occupation forces on Monday, with the opposition accusation the Government of pursuing a “capitulant policy and assuring the public of illusionary peace”, while the authorities saying the “treacherous policy” of the previous United National Movement had brought the “gravest consequences” of the ongoing occupation.
“Is it peace when our citizen, who goes to his father’s grave to pray, is shot in the back by the Russian occupation forces and killed? The only way to achieve real peace and ensure that our citizens are protected everywhere on the territory of Georgia is for Georgia to join NATO and the European Union. Each of us must fight and work”, Tina Bokuchava, from the UNM said.
Irakli Kobakhidze, the ruling party head, and Kakha Kaladze, the party Secretary General, said the UNM policy while in office and its failure to avoid war with Russia in 2008 had led to the “gravest security consequences” for the country.
