Kiril recalled his personal relationship with Ilia II as “warm and trusting"

Patriarch Kiril of Moscow and All Russia has expressed condolences following the death of His Holiness, Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II, describing his nearly fifty-year leadership as “an entire era” in the history of the Georgian Orthodox Church and the wider Orthodox world.

In a statement on Wednesday Kirill highlighted Ilia II’s extraordinary influence, saying his devoted service, wisdom, and personal authority earned him deep respect both in ecclesiastical and public life. “As godfather to countless children, he became the true spiritual father of the devout Georgian people,” Kiril said.

The Russian Patriarch also stressed the longstanding cooperation between the Georgian and Russian churches. He noted Ilia II’s lifelong appreciation for St. Sergius Seminary and his commitment to maintaining spiritual unity between their peoples. “His leadership contributed significantly to peace, well-being, and the spiritual life of the Church, even under the pressures of the Soviet era,” Kiril wrote.

Kiril recalled his personal relationship with Ilia II as “warm and trusting,” which allowed them to collaborate in preserving Orthodox institutions during difficult political times. He concluded by praying that “the Lord Jesus Christ may grant eternal rest to the soul of His faithful servant.”

Patriarch Ilia II, who led the Georgian Orthodox Church for decades, died on 17 March at the age of 93.
