A Russian court has convicted Georgian opposition leader Aleko Elisashvili in absentia of taking part as a mercenary in the war in Ukraine, sentencing him to six years in a high-security penal colony, Russia’s Investigative Committee said on Wednesday.
The committee alleged that in March 2022 Elisashvili joined an armed formation in Ukraine, underwent military training, and was issued weapons and ammunition. He was accused of carrying out orders from senior commanders in exchange for payment and of taking part in combat operations against Russian forces.
The court ruled that the evidence was sufficient to convict him under Article 359, Part 3, of Russia’s Criminal Code, which criminalises mercenary activity in armed conflict. A pre-trial detention was ordered in his absence.
Elisashvili, 47, is the founder and head of the liberal, pro-European Citizens party. Now is part of the Strong Georgia coalition, which unites several opposition groups. Before entering politics, Elisashvili worked as a journalist and civic activist in Tbilisi.
In March 2022, he volunteered for Ukraine’s International Legion, joining combat operations against Russian forces. He is known for his criticism of the Georgian government and involvement in high-profile incidents, including a parliamentary brawl in April 2024 over a controversial foreign transparency bill. Elisashvili has faced several legal challenges at home, including charges of assault and political persecution, which he and his supporters describe as politically motivated.
