Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has commented on the recent statement by Georgia’s ruling party, Georgian Dream, regarding the country’s readiness to join the European Union by 2030.
In her remarks, Zakharova urged aspiring EU members to “look at the numbers, not slogans,” and referenced the United Kingdom’s exit from the EU as a cautionary tale. She suggested that by 2030, there might not be much of the EU left to join.
“The main thing for those striving for EU membership by 2030 or any other date is that there should still be something to join. Just remember—Britain wouldn’t have left something that was good,” she said.
Despite the geopolitical tensions and lack of formal diplomatic relations, Zakharova emphasized that Russia and Georgia are building what she described as a “mutually beneficial and respectful relationship.”
She also stated that Moscow has repeatedly shown goodwill and seeks to strengthen both business and humanitarian cooperation with Georgia.
