A Russian drone strike on a civilian evacuation bus in Ukraine’s northern Sumy region killed nine people and injured four others on Saturday, according to regional officials. The attack targeted people fleeing the city of Bilopillia, with most of the victims reported to be elderly women.

In an updated statement posted on Telegram on May 17, the Sumy Regional Military Administration described the incident as a “cynical attack” on civilians. “Unfortunately, as a result of a cynical attack by Russians on a bus with civilians, there are dead,” the statement read. Initial reports confirmed eight fatalities, but the number rose to nine as authorities identified more victims.

The wounded have been taken to a hospital in the city of Sumy for treatment, while investigators continue to work at the site of the strike. Law enforcement officials are collecting evidence and documenting the aftermath to ensure accountability for what they called a deliberate attack on non-combatants.

The head of the Bilopillia community condemned the strike, calling the day “Black Saturday” in a Facebook post, and vowed that those responsible would face justice.

This latest attack underscores the ongoing toll of Russia’s war on civilians in Ukraine, particularly in regions close to the border.
