Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is the most important and direct threat to the security of Europe, the Japanese defence said earlier this week.
The official document noted despite its status as a member of the UN Security Council, Russia had disregarded international law, and its government’s rhetoric and actions could be interpreted as a threat to use nuclear weapons.
“The world community, as well as Japan, will not tolerate such actions of Russia”, it said.
Japanese authorities also expressed their concerns about the strengthening of China’s military presence in the East China and South China Seas, as well as joint military exercises between Russia and China.
“Another threat is North Korea, which is developing nuclear and missile capabilities”, Japan said, adding it saw diplomatic relations a priority, but reserved the right to “defend its own land” and deter a potential adversary.
