Russian missile attack on Sumy injures 28, including children

A Russian missile strike on an industrial facility in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy injured at least 28 people on Monday, including four children, local officials reported. The attack also caused significant damage to a residential area and a hospital.

Acting Sumy mayor Artem Kobzar confirmed the casualties via Telegram but did not disclose details about the targeted facility. Meanwhile, Sumy regional governor Volodymyr Artiukh stated that the missile hit the city center, damaging multiple high-rise buildings and a school. “Children were in a shelter at the time of the attack,” he added.

Footage from the scene showed heavy black smoke billowing over the city, with fires burning in the background. A vehicle with shattered windows and smoke rising from the upper floors of a five-story residential building further illustrated the destruction.

Located just 30 kilometers from the Russian border, Sumy and its surrounding region remain under frequent drone and missile strikes by Russian forces. Ukrainian officials continue to urge international allies for additional air defense systems to protect civilian areas from ongoing assaults.
