A Russian missile strike targeted a Ukrainian military training facility on July 29, killing three servicemen and wounding 18 others, Ukraine’s Ground Forces confirmed in a statement on Telegram.
“Despite the security measures taken, unfortunately, it was not possible to completely avoid losses among the personnel,” the statement read. The attack is the latest in a series of deadly strikes on Ukrainian training centers in recent months.
Although the Ukrainian military did not disclose the location of the strike, pro-war Russian bloggers and military observers claimed the attack occurred in the Chernihiv region near Ukraine’s northern border. Ukraine said a formal investigation had been launched and pledged accountability if the losses were found to be the result of negligence or failure by military officials.
In a separate statement reported by Russian state media, Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed its forces carried out an Iskander missile strike on a Ukrainian training camp in the Chernihiv region. Reuters said it could not independently verify the claims from either side.
Ukrainian officials also announced the implementation of additional security measures aimed at protecting troops stationed at training sites from future missile and aerial attacks.
The strike comes after similar incidents in June. A Russian attack on a training ground in central Ukraine that month killed 12 servicemen and wounded dozens, prompting the resignation of the Ground Forces commander. Another June strike on a training facility in southern Ukraine killed three and injured 14.
As Russia continues to target rear positions, Ukraine has increasingly been forced to reassess the safety of its training infrastructure.
