Police in Georgia have arrested a 40-year-old man on suspicion of murder after a fatal stabbing in the city of Rustavi, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has said.

Officers from the Kvemo Kartli Police Department detained a suspect identified by the initials I.B., born in 1985, in connection with the incident.

Investigators established that the suspect stabbed a man, born in 1989 and identified as D.S., in the chest with a bladed weapon following an argument in Rustavi. The suspect then fled the scene.

The man was taken to hospital, but doctors were unable to save him.

The ministry said the suspect presented himself to police the following day and confessed to the crime. He was subsequently arrested as a defendant in the case.

The crime carries a sentence of up to 15 years’ imprisonment if the accused is convicted.
