Former president of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili has posted a letter on his Facebook account on the 18th anniversary of the Rose Revolution, a peaceful coup by him and his United National Movement party back in 2003 which overthrew Eduard Shevardnadze’s government.
In the letter Saakashvili, who was arrested in Tbilisi on October 1 after eight years in political exile, says that before the revolution Georgia was just a territory and only after, thanks to fundamental reforms, became a state.
Saakashvili said that while in power he and his party have created the country which became a role model for many foreign states, and which still is a frontrunner in the region for western development.
“The Rose Revolution has turned Georgia a super star in the region which has become an inspiration for many, including for Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon….Our reforms were a topic for the whole international community which irritated the enemy much,” Saakashvili said.
The United National Movement is scheduled to make a human chain in central Tbilisi today to celebrate the date.
