Saakashvili: I’ll stop treatment if MPs are banned from seeing me

Former president Mikheil Saakashvili says that he will refuse after-hunger-strike treatment if opposition MPs are not allowed to see him in Gori military hospital. 

 

Saakashvili says that the opposition MPs are banned from seeing him in hospital since his transfer there last week, on his 50th day of hunger strike. 

 

“If the opposition MPs are not allowed to see me tomorrow, I will not receive any treatment,” Saakashvili posted on Facebook. 

 

In his previous posts he called for the creation of a public committee to ensure his release from prison, as well as rallies and a large rally in capital Tbilisi next month. 

 

Saakashvili agreed to stop his hunger strike last week. 

 

The third president, who is now a citizen of Ukraine, says that he returned after eight years in political exile to remove the Georgian Dream government from power. 

 

He was convicted in absentia in Georgia back in 2018 for abuse of power and was sentenced to six years in prison. 

 

Saakashvili has also been charged with five other offences, including illegal seizure of property, embezzlement, abuse of power, illegally crossing the border and illegal rally dispersal.
