Saakashvili issue resurgence in EP resolution targets Tbilisi with pressure – parliamentary committee chair

Maka Botchorishvili, the Chairperson of the European Integration Committee, on friday asserts that the renewed emphasis on the Mikheil  Saakashvili issue in the European Parliament latest resolution aimed to exert pressure on Georgia and its justice system. 

She argued that this move seeks to bypass legal procedures and portray criminals as heroes.

“The resurgence of the Saakashvili issue in the European Parliament resolution reveals the true intentions of those advocating for such measures against Georgia. It’s a deliberate attempt to apply intense pressure on our country, circumventing legal processes and glorifying criminals. Unfortunately, we have seen this tactic employed repeatedly by individuals lobbying for Mikheil Saakashvili’s release, despite the absence of any valid humanitarian justification,”  Botchorishvili remarked.

Saakashvili, the third president of Georgia, was arrested in tbilisi in 2021 and is currently serving his six-year term for abuse of power while in office. The resolution this week advocated for the former official’s release.
