Georgia’s former president Mikheil Saakashvili, who has attended a trial hearing earlier today on the embezzlement of almost nine million GEL while in office, has asked why his former wife Sandra Roelofs has not been charged in the same offense as ‘1/4th of 1/5th of the money’ was spent for her needs.

The Prosecutor’s Office says that Saakashvili embezzled the money between 2009 and 2013 for expensive aesthetic procedures, clothes and for the individuals connected with him.

Saakashvili said, however, ‘that before you file charges against Sandra, remember about millions of euros in grants she attracted for Georgia.’

“She attracted 100 million euros for the Georgian healthcare field. Thanks to Sandra, hundreds of Georgian women no longer die from breast cancer and many others,” Saakashvili said.

Saakashvili stated  that he was with Roelofs in New York during the UN assembly while in power when his former wife was operated on, noting that ‘it was a quite expensive operation.’

The next trial in the case was scheduled on December 27. Saakashvili says that he is a political prisoner, while the Georgian Dream government members state that everyone is equal before the law.
