Officers from the Investigative Service of Georgia’s Ministry of Finance have arrested two individuals on charges of transporting a particularly large quantity of undeclared goods across the country’s customs border.
According to the ministry, the suspects, acting as part of a pre-arranged group on behalf of a company, submitted false information in a customs declaration, declaring the goods’ value as GEL 48,502 instead of GEL 536,028. Using this falsified declaration, a truck was used to import various goods from Turkey into Georgia.
An inspection of the vehicle revealed that most of the goods listed in the declaration were replaced with undeclared merchandise valued at GEL 536,028, including perfumes, hygiene products, room fragrances, plumbing equipment, energy drinks, confectionery, and other items.
The investigation is being conducted under Article 214, Part 5(d) of Georgia’s Criminal Code, which carries a prison sentence of 8 to 11 years.
