A group of young people displaced from Georgia’s currently Russian-occupied Abkhazia region have taken part in an international youth camp on the Greek island of Rhodes, organised by the Service Agency of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia’s Ministry for Internally Displaced Persons, with the support of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
The two-week programme, held from 7 to 20 August, offered teenagers a mix of cultural, educational and recreational activities. Participants also visited historic sites across Rhodes.
At the camp’s closing ceremony, Igor Kopaliani, Deputy Minister for Internally Displaced Persons from Abkhazia, met the young participants, presented them with certificates and wished them success in their future studies and activities.
The organizers said the initiative aimed to help displaced children maintain connections to cultural and educational opportunities abroad. The Service Agency, in cooperation with the Ecumenical Patriarchate, has been running such international camps for four years, including in Greece and more recently in Turkey. The programme targets teenagers aged 12 to 16.
