President Zourabichvili honors journalists as ‘heroes of era’ amid protests

President Salome Zourabichvili awarded journalists and camera operators covering the ongoing protests during a ceremony at the Orbeliani Palace on December 10.

“You are the ones who have taken not only cameras and microphones into your hands but also the country’s fate. For this dedication, you will be recorded in Georgia’s history as the heroes of this era,” Zourabichvili said.

The President commended journalists for their bravery, highlighting the risks they take while reporting from volatile protests.

“This day, globally recognized as Human Rights Day, has become a day in Georgia that symbolizes the trampling of human rights. Those who stood and fought during these days will forever be etched in our history. We will remember everyone involved, no matter the masks they wear,” she stated.

Zourabichvili also emphasized the journalists’ role in defending Georgia’s identity and culture, saying, “It’s not easy to stand where tear gas is deployed or where journalists are attacked. I wouldn’t dare. Today, the world sees no country fighting as peacefully and honorably as Georgia for its identity and language. You, alongside the true society, are leading this fight.”

The ceremony was held to recognize and honor those documenting the protests despite the challenges and dangers they face.
