Georgian law enforcement agencies have seized 200 kilograms of heroin valued at more than $50 million on the black market, Deputy Interior Minister Aleksandre Darakhvelidze announced on Saturday.

The Minister added the drugs were discovered in a truck loaded with “fish feed.” Hidden inside the cargo were eight sacks containing the heroin.

The truck, driven by a 1989-born citizen of Iran identified as M.B., had entered Georgia from Iran via Azerbaijan through the Red Bridge border checkpoint. The suspect has been detained.

“Law enforcement officers seized 200 kilograms of heroin concealed in the cargo. Evidence confirms that the vehicle entered Georgia from Iran through Azerbaijan. We will continue investigative actions to identify and prosecute other individuals possibly involved in the crime,” Darakhvelidze said.

The crime is punishable by up to 20 years or life imprisonment.
