Georgia’s Interior Ministry on Wednesday said officers from the Central Criminal Police Department, working alongside the Customs Department of the Finance Ministry’s Revenue Service, have prevented an attempt to distribute an especially large quantity of narcotic substances in the country.
Two individuals have been arrested on charges of attempting to illegally purchase and possess a particularly large quantity of narcotics, as well as facilitating their distribution.
The ministry said law enforcement officers carried out controlled deliveries of parcels sent to the suspects from various countries as part of an operation aimed at exposing the accused, confirming that the individuals had allegedly attempted to unlawfully obtain and store multiple types of narcotic substances.
Police said evidence seized from the parcels and the suspects’ residences included a particularly large quantity of drugs, among them nearly six kilograms of mephedrone, 10 MDMA tablets, up to 200 grams of hashish, and three tablets plus tablet fragments of Subotex.
Investigators also confiscated materials allegedly intended for the packaging of narcotics during subsequent investigative procedures, the ministry added.
The offences are punishable by up to 20 years or life imprisonment.
