Law enforcement officers from Georgia’s Central Criminal Police Department and the Customs Department of the Revenue Service have jointly detained a citizen of Turkey, born in 1995, on charges of drug trafficking.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the suspect has been accused of illegally purchasing, possessing, and importing a particularly large quantity of narcotic drugs into Georgia.

The offense carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison or life imprisonment.

“During an inspection at the Sarpi border checkpoint, officers found and seized three packages containing a particularly large amount of the narcotic substance cocaine, which was intended for illegal importation into Georgia,” the ministry said.

An investigation is ongoing under Articles 260 and 262 of Georgia’s Criminal Code, which pertain to the illegal purchase, possession, and transportation of narcotic substances across the state border.
