Police detained the suspect shortly after the incident

Police in Georgia’s Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region have arrested a 23-year-old man on suspicion of attempted armed robbery, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has said.

According to investigators, the suspect, identified as B.G. and born in 2001, allegedly threatened an employee of a supermarket in the city of Zugdidi with a weapon on Monday and demanded money. The attempt was not carried out, and the suspect fled the scene.

Police detained the suspect shortly after the incident. The weapon allegedly used in the crime has been seized as evidence.

An investigation has been launched under Article 179 of Georgia’s Criminal Code, which relates to robbery and carries a possible sentence of up to seven years in prison, the ministry said.
