Police in western Georgia have arrested two Moldovan citizens on charges of illegally purchasing, possessing and facilitating the sale of large quantities of drugs, the Interior Ministry said on Monday.

Officers from the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti Police Department carried out searches of the suspects’ temporary residence, vehicle and several other locations.

Investigators said they seized 31 packages of methadone-containing granules and powder prepared for sale, which authorities described as an especially large quantity of narcotics.

Police also confiscated materials allegedly intended for packaging drugs during the course of the investigation.

The offences are punishable by up to 20 years in prison or life imprisonment.
