Georgian fencer Sandro Bazadze has been crowned world champion for the first time in his career, claiming the title in front of a home crowd in Tbilisi.
“I congratulate myself and Georgia on this victory. This is not only my achievement, it is a victory for all of Georgia,” Bazadze said after his triumph.
The 31-year-old expressed his joy and gratitude, saying:
“It’s hard to put into words. I’m the happiest person – I became a world champion in front of my beloved people. I wish this kind of success to every Georgian athlete. I want to tell the kids: work hard. Behind this victory is a lot of effort – without it, I couldn’t have achieved anything.”
Bazadze also reflected on the challenges he faced throughout his career:
“There were many obstacles along the way, but I never gave up. Age is just a number.”
Prior to this gold medal, Bazadze had already earned silver and bronze at world championships. The Fencing World Championships officially kicked off in Tbilisi on July 22.
