The Holy Synod of the Georgian Orthodox Church will convene on March 18 at 14:00 following the death of Ilia II, according to a statement from the Patriarchate.

The Synod meeting is expected to determine and announce further details regarding the funeral arrangements of the Catholicos-Patriarch.

Following the session, the body of Ilia II will be transferred from the Patriarchal residence to the Holy Trinity Cathedral (Sameba), the main cathedral of the Georgian Orthodox Church.

The Patriarchate also noted that no memorial service (panikhida) is scheduled to take place on March 18.

Ilia II died on March 17 at the age of 93.
