Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs has launched an investigation after numerous citizens reported receiving suspicious emails falsely attributed to the Head of the Patrol Police Department.

According to an official statement released on Thursday, the emergency hotline 112 and the Patrol Police Unified Service Center were inundated with calls from concerned members of the public who had received emails of unknown content purportedly from the director of the department.

“In order to inform citizens, we would like to clarify that the above-mentioned messages were not sent by the Director of the Patrol Police Department, and we urge them not to be misled,” the ministry said.

Authorities have not disclosed the nature of the emails or the number of individuals affected. However, they confirmed that the relevant services have launched a formal investigation to determine the source of the messages.
