Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze will chair a newly established government coordination commission tasked with examining food prices and retail mark-ups.

The decision was approved at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday. According to the head of the government administration, Levan Zhorzholiani, the commission will include line ministers, representatives of the prime minister’s office and the national Competition Agency.

Zhorzholiani said the prime minister had raised concerns about what he described as unjustified price increases on basic food products, noting that mark-ups often “lack any logical explanation” and place an added burden on consumers.
