Georgia’s Maritime Transport Agency on Monday said it had launched a review within its competence following law enforcement actions taken by UK authorities against the oil tanker SMYRTOS (IMO 9389100) in the English Channel.
The Agency said information provided by the British authorities indicates that the vessel currently has a crew of 24, including three Georgian citizens.
The body noted that all crew members are safe and that there are no threats to their health.
It also stressed that Georgian legislation and the Agency’s regulatory framework require crewing companies to conduct strict sanctions compliance checks and prohibit the employment of seafarers on vessels or with shipowners subject to sanctions imposed by the United Nations, the European Union, the United States or the United Kingdom.
According to the statement, the Agency reviewed data from recognised Georgian crewing and seafarer recruitment companies and found that the vessel did not appear in the employment, recruitment or placement records of any recognised Georgian company.
“As a result, the employment of the Georgian sailors was not arranged through companies recognised by the Maritime Transport Agency,” the statement said.
The Agency added that it continues to cooperate with the relevant UK authorities and is closely monitoring the outcome of the ongoing investigation. It said the safety of Georgian seafarers, the protection of their labour rights and full compliance with international sanctions regimes remain its top priorities.
The Agency also reaffirmed Georgia’s commitment to implementing international sanctions, responsible maritime governance and the rule of law.
