German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stressed the “crucial importance” of Georgia’s upcoming 2024 general elections being conducted freely and fairly during a joint briefing following his meeting with Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze in Berlin on Friday.

Scholz highlighted the integrity of these elections as “essential” for initiating European Union accession talks, following Tbilisi’s candidacy approval last year.

“The forthcoming parliamentary elections are of immense significance. Ensuring they are conducted with transparency and integrity is paramount for advancing Georgia’s EU integration. Germany remains steadfast in its support for Georgia’s path towards the EU” Scholz said. The elections in Georgia are scheduled for October 26.
