Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili has responded to Friday's remarks by the European Union’s spokesperson for foreign affairs, accusing the EU of avoiding legitimate concerns raised by the Georgian people.
“Instead of answering the Georgian public’s legitimate questions, the EU spokesperson has chosen to resort to the tactic of labeling things as ‘Russian’—a response that speaks volumes,” Papuashvili wrote on social media.
His comments follow the European Union's firm statement in defense of EU Ambassador to Georgia, Paweł Herczyński, and condemnation of what it termed a disinformation campaign by Georgian officials.
EU foreign affairs spokesperson Anuare El Anouar rejected what he described as “baseless accusations and deliberate disinformation” aimed at undermining the EU’s role in Georgia. The statement denounced recent claims suggesting that the EU is attempting to destabilize Georgia or promote "non-traditional values," calling them part of a “Russian-style” narrative meant to mislead the public.
The EU also condemned personal attacks against Ambassador Herczyński and called on all political actors in Georgia to refrain from disinformation and divisive rhetoric.
Despite the tensions, the EU reiterated its support for Georgia’s democratic development and territorial integrity, reaffirming its commitment to the Georgian people and their European future.
