Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Saturday said municipal elections, “normally a political event of lesser significance”, had become a “referendum on trust for the Government” that the ruling Georgian Dream “won with confidence”.

In a social media post Papuashvili said one million people across the country voted for Georgian Dream, including over 200,000 votes for Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze.

“These represent record numbers for Georgian Dream in the past four consecutive municipal elections, both nationally as well as in Tbilisi”, he said.

“We won this election together with the people who chose peace over war, loyalty to the homeland over foreign dominance, and the future over the past. I am grateful to every voter and promise that we will stand even firmer for our nation, our faith, and our country,” he added.

He also commented on recent unrest, saying, “As for the foreign-supported violence committed by radicals last night - I will write about that, and I will write a lot".
