The Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, has congratulated Catholicos-Patriarch Shio III following his enthronement at Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, describing the ceremony as “a great day” for Georgian society.

Addressing a plenary session of parliament on Wednesday, Papuashvili said the enthronement took place at the “holy cathedral” of the Georgian Orthodox Church, which tradition holds was founded by Andrew the Apostle.

He wished Shio III success in carrying what he described as the “heavy cross” inherited from Ilia II, and said he hoped the new patriarch would uphold the core values of the Orthodox faith.

Papuashvili said society had witnessed a “rare historical moment” and that the occasion had been marked with “special joy”.

“We were witnesses to a moment that rarely occurs in a person’s lifetime,” he said. “I wish that for many years to come, Shio III will continue to lead our Church.”

He also congratulated the new patriarch and the people of Georgia on what he called a “special and historic day”.
