France’s Ambassador to Georgia, Sheraz Gasri, has called on Georgian authorities to release what she described as “unjustly detained” politicians, journalists, and activists, and to reverse a “trend toward authoritarianism”.

Speaking at a Bastille Day reception marking France’s national holiday on Tuesday, Gasri reaffirmed France’s support for Georgia’s European aspirations and democratic future, while warning against internal divisions and “repressive” governance.

“This is a time to reflect on the ideals of liberty, equality, fraternity - which were once revolutionary but are now a prerequisite for all modern democratic states,” Gasri said. “France is on the side of freedom. When we say ‘yes’ to Georgia’s free will to join the European Union… we also say ‘no’ to the repression of civil society.”

Her comments come amid mounting international criticism of the Georgian government’s recent legislative and other steps, which the critics argue are aligning with Russian interests.

“As my mandate in Georgia comes to an end, I believe that the Georgian people, united by a deep sense of independence, will overcome their divisions and defend their democratic and European aspirations,” she added, invoking a message of hope despite the current political climate.

Gasri also highlighted France’s “continued economic and humanitarian cooperation” with Georgia, including support for women’s entrepreneurship, rural development, and pediatric healthcare. She noted French involvement in cultural heritage projects, from restoring Khevsureti towers to preserving Georgian music traditions.

“We are proud that PSG reached its peak with Kvara, and Georgia exceeded all expectations with Willy Sagnol,” she said.

Concluding her speech, the ambassador emphasized the importance of resisting “conspiracy theories and propaganda,” urging both governments and citizens to protect shared values in a time of global uncertainty.
