Gela Geladze has been appointed as the new Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced on Wednesday. 

Geladze succeeds Vakhtang Gomelauri, who has served in the role since 2019. In his statement, Kobakhidze thanked Gomelauri for his service and wished him success in the future.

"Gela Geladze is a lawyer with outstanding qualifications," said Kobakhidze. "He brings extensive experience from both the public and private sectors and has held senior positions in multiple key government institutions."

Geladze has served in various roles within the Ministry of Internal Affairs and has previously worked in the Prosecutor's Office, the Special State Protection Service, the Ministry of Justice, and the Ministry of Corrections and Probation. His public service career also includes senior roles at the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth, and the Ministry of Defence.

Most recently, he held the position of Deputy Head of the State Security Service.

Kobakhidze expressed confidence in the new minister’s ability to lead the ministry effectively.

 “Under his leadership, I am confident that progress and development will continue within the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The interests of police officers will remain a top priority, and the system will be further strengthened.”
