Georgia’s Interior Ministry reports escalations, accuses protesters of violating law

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia has reported escalating tensions during protests near the Parliament building, accusing demonstrators of exceeding the limits set by the country’s Assembly and Manifestation law. According to the statement, the situation turned violent when protest participants physically confronted and verbally abused law enforcement officers.

The Ministry claims that after repeated calls to disperse, protesters threw objects at officers, causing injuries to three police personnel. Two officers were subsequently transported to medical facilities for treatment.

’’In order to de-escalate the situation, police resorted to measures established by law and applied special means,” the statement reads.
The Ministry has urged protesters to comply with law enforcement instructions and warned that continued illegal actions could lead to further legal action. They emphasized that any additional violations would result in the use of coercive measures in accordance with the Law of Georgia “On Police.”

The protests were sparked by the government’s decision to postpone EU accession negotiations until 2028, a move which has led to widespread public discontent and calls for fresh elections.
