Interior Ministry launches investigation into CEC incident under article 118

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia has initiated an investigation into the Saturday’s incident at the Central Election Commission (CEC) under Article 118 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to intentional infliction of less severe bodily harm.

According to the Ministry, the investigation was launched following a formal request from the CEC.

The incident took place during the parliamentary elections’ summary session. Davit Kirtaidze, a United National Movement opposition representative, sprayed an unidentified black liquid on CEC Chair Giorgi Kalandarishvili. Kirtadze himself said it was black paint, adding his action was a form of protest against ‘forged’ parliamentary elections.

The Ministry’s statement confirms that all relevant investigative procedures will be carried out to determine the facts surrounding the case.
