Swedish Ambassador to Georgia, Anna Lyberg, emphasized in a recent social media post that EU membership is “merit-based and fully dependent on each country’s progress.” She pointed out that while the EU’s doors remain open, Georgia must return to its European path for the integration process to advance.

“This year, Georgia has moved backwards. Georgia’s EU accession process is paused. The EU’s door remains open when Georgia returns to the EU path,” Lyberg stated.

On October 30, the European Commission published its annual report on EU enlargement, addressing Georgia’s integration status. According to the report, Georgia’s EU integration process had been stopped. EU Ambassador to Georgia, Pavel Herczynski, explained that the suspension is a direct result of the Georgian government’s current policy direction, adding the process will remain paused as long as Georgia continues to distance itself from the EU.
