Georgia's Ministry of Internal Affairs has launched a new unit tasked with monitoring and responding to alleged hate speech offences.

The unit, which operates within the Human Rights Protection Department, will monitor and proactively identify publicly disseminated statements containing hate speech or language deemed degrading or insulting to human dignity when such statements may constitute an administrative offence under Georgian law.

The unit's responsibilities will include identifying suspected offenders, establishing their identity, preparing administrative case materials, drawing up offence reports and submitting cases to the courts in accordance with jurisdictional procedures.

The ministry said the unit will initially consist of ten staff members.
