Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has stated that visa restrictions should be imposed on those responsible for political repression, rather than the Georgian population at large.
"I was born in communist Poland. It was an authoritarian regime, but at certain times we were allowed to travel abroad. During those years, we deeply appreciated countries like Austria, Sweden, and West Berlin, which allowed us to enter without a visa. It was a window to the world for us," Sikorski said.
He stressed that the Polish government believes in targeting restrictive measures at individuals responsible for repression. "We think restrictions should be applied to those responsible for the repression, not the Georgian people," he said.
Sikorski also expressed support for the EU's approach under High Representative Kaja Kallas, who urged the Georgian government to stop the persecution of the opposition.
"Poland supports the policy of the EU High Representative on Georgia, Kaja Kallas, which at this stage is aimed at convincing the Georgian government to end the legal prosecution of the opposition," he noted.
