Ukraine's Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi on Tuesday said Russia was considering several options for launching new offensive operations from the north, including a possible attack on Ukraine's Chernihiv region.
Syrskyi said Russian President Vladimir Putin had instructed the country's General Staff to prepare different offensive scenarios, including one involving Belarusian territory aimed at advancing towards Kyiv and other areas.
The Ukrainian commander said he did not believe Belarusian authorities would agree to allow their territory to be used again as a launchpad for a Russian offensive, but stressed that Kyiv was nevertheless taking the possibility into account.
"The most likely scenario, according to several pieces of information we have received, is a possible offensive from Russia's Bryansk region – not towards Kyiv, but towards the Chernihiv region," Syrskyi said.
He added that Russia's objective was to force Ukrainian forces to redeploy reserves from key sectors of the frontline by expanding the scope of the conflict and attempting to penetrate deeper into Ukrainian territory.
