Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced that he will travel to Moscow on May 9 to attend events marking the 80th anniversary of the victory over Nazism. His statement comes amid rising tensions, as Fico accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of attempting to intimidate world leaders ahead of the commemoration.
Fico emphasized that the safety of visiting foreign officials in Moscow will be the responsibility of the Russian authorities. He also interpreted Zelenskyy’s recent comment — suggesting Ukraine cannot guarantee the safety of dignitaries visiting Russia — as a threat.
“If President Zelenskyy believes his threats will prevent anyone from attending, he is deeply mistaken,” said Fico. “It is a sign of great disrespect to tell the country that contributed most to the defeat of fascism, ‘Go ahead and celebrate — we might send drones or something similar.’”
Fico called on Zelenskyy to accept Moscow’s proposed three-day ceasefire.
Meanwhile, Slovak media have speculated about Fico’s health in recent days due to his absence from public events and several cancellations. When asked directly about his condition on Sunday, Fico dismissed concerns, stating, “It’s nobody’s business.” He acknowledged lingering effects from an assassination attempt last year but insisted it has not interfered with his ability to govern.
Fico last met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on December 22, 2024.
