Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger has called on German Chancellor Olaf Scholz during a visit to Berlin to support Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova as EU membership candidates, while also urging the German leader to see the horrors of war with his “own eyes,” Politico has reported.

He stated that “we have to understand that enlargement is necessary. The world needs Europe to be strong and these countries are waiting.”

Heger suggested that candidacy of Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova for EU membership would be the first step, and that the further integration of these countries into the bloc “should be based on merit.”

The trio applied for EU membership shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine in late February and are now expecting the EU decision on the candidate status.
