Eduard Saakashvili, son of currently imprisoned former president Mikheil Saakashvili, on Monday addressed the European Parliament and requested MEPs to take actions for the release of convicted former official on medical grounds.

“Something must change and my father’s life must be saved, his health must be maintained, – said Eduard Saakashvili.

“There is a solution for the Georgian government to allow him to receive treatment abroad.  We think we have a real chance now with the support of our friends from Europe, amid the growing consensus that the situation is very acute and it must change”, he noted.

MEP Anna Fotyga presented Eduard Saaakshvili, his mother and a lawyer for speech at the body.

Saakashvili, who currently holds Ukrainian citizenship, was arrested in Tbilisi in October last year and is now serving his six-year-term for abuse of power while in office.
