Shalva Papuashvili, the Georgian Parliament Speaker, on Friday emphasized the “crucial role of public input” in the ratification of constitutional amendments related to family values.

“In all democratic societies, power originates from the people. Through the electoral process, citizens entrust their elected representatives with a mandate to govern for a specified period. However, it is imperative that this process remains inclusive and responsive to the needs and values of the people. Our constitution and laws dictate that certain decisions require direct engagement with the public, particularly those that pertain to our core values, ideals, and the fundamental structure of our state,” Papuashvili remarked, underlining the importance of public engagement in this matter.

This proactive approach by the parliament, as articulated by Papuashvili, underscored its commitment to transparent and inclusive governance, ensuring that the voices and concerns of the citizens were duly considered in the decision-making process regarding constitutional amendments.

Public discussions of amendments on “family values” and “protection of minors”, proposed by the ruling Georgian Dream party, launched on Monday amid criticism by the domestic opposition and international partners, pointing to alleged threats to human rights.
