Irakli Kobakhidze, the Prime Minister of Georgia, issued a decree in late February according to which the state will no longer provide financial coverage for childbirth and cesarean sections performed by surrogate mothers.
This decision marks a departure from the previous policy, which had not imposed any restrictions on the financing of this service. The new regulation concerning childbirth financing had become effective immediately upon its enactment.
The universal healthcare program was initiated following the ascent of the Georgian Dream party to power. On February 21, 2013, the government ratified regulations outlining the financing of healthcare services for Georgian citizens.
