The Strategy Agmashenebeli parliamentary opposition party says it supports the creation of a temporary parliamentary commission which will investigate alleged inhuman treatment towards imprisoned former president Mikheil Saakashvili while in Georgian prison.
Saakashvili, who was arrested in Tbilisi on October 1 after eight years in political exile, claims that he was a victim of inhuman and degrading treatment by the prison staff and is demanding the creation of the commission.
His United National Movement opposition party, which is boycotting parliament sessions now, says that they will enter the state legislature if the commission is created.
Now they are holding negotiations with other opposition parties as the creation of the commission needs the support of at least 50 MPs in the 150-member parliament, while the opposition occupies 66 seats.
MPs from the ex-PM Giorgi Gakharia For Georgia party say that they will not support the creation of the commission now as the president has not yet signed the bill which allows the abolition of the State Inspector’s Office as it is now, as the independent agency is authorized to investigate alleged offenses by law enforcement agencies and officers.
The party also criticized the United National Movement for not attending the vote which concerned the split of the State Inspector’s Office per the bill initiated by the ruling Georgian Dream party MPs.
