The strong winds wreaked havoc across several municipalities in the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region in western Georgia on Tuesday.
In Tsalenjikha, Chkhorotsku, Martvili, and Zugdidi, a number of perennial trees were uprooted, causing damage to power transmission lines and leaving parts of the region without electricity. Dozens of residential houses in Tsalenjikha, Martvili, Chkhorotsku, and Zugdidi had their roofs blown off by the powerful gusts.
The press office of Tsalenjikha City Hall reported that as of this morning, up to 15 private houses across the municipality had lost their roofs. They anticipate this number to rise as they continue to receive updates from affected villages.
In Zugdidi municipality, the wind partially damaged the roof of a public school in the village of Rukhi, leading to a halt in the day’s classes.
Additionally, a tree torn down by the wind partially damaged the house of culture in Zugdidi.
In Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region seven residential houses in Anaklia were inundated with water due to the overflow of the Enguri River.
Reports indicate that road crews worked through the night to clear uprooted trees from roads in Samegrelo municipalities, restoring traffic flow.
Heavy snowfall has also restricted traffic movement towards Mestia municipality on the central road.
Parts of Svaneti are experiencing power outages. Energo-Pro Georgia has assured that restoration efforts are underway, and electricity will be gradually reinstated to affected subscribers.
