The State Security Service of Georgia is launching a detailed review of issues related to consumer prices, the First Deputy Head of the body, Lasha Maghradze, announced on Wednesday.
Maghradze stated that within its mandate, the State Security Service would thoroughly examine developments related to consumer prices and that any illegal actions harming the interests of Georgian citizens or the country’s economic security would be met with strict legal response.
The issue of consumer prices has also drawn attention at the highest levels of Government. Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, in a video address, said the Government would actively engage with distribution companies and retail chains to achieve price reductions for consumers.
He added that he would ask Parliament to establish a special parliamentary commission to assess the situation. The Prime Minister also called on law enforcement agencies to conduct an in-depth review of the matter.
