European Parliament member (MEP) Sven Mikser expressed disappointment in the Georgian government’s actions, stating that it has worked against the aspirations of the Georgian people. Speaking during a European Parliament debate on Georgia on Tuesday, Mikser emphasized the hope that Georgia will fulfill its declared commitments.
Mikser noted that the Georgian government’s actions contradict the European ideals and aspirations of its citizens.
“I consider myself a friend of Georgia. I have always been impressed by the Georgian people’s strong desire for European and Euro-Atlantic integration. This has been the aspiration of the vast majority in Georgia, but the government’s steps go against these goals,” Mikser
said.
He specifically criticized recently adopted controversial laws, saying they restrict the functioning of NGOs and civil society and contribute to the marginalization of minorities. These actions, he argued, run counter to Georgia’s declared European ambitions.
Mikser also acknowledged the support Georgia has received from European institutions, including the conditional granting of EU candidate status. However, he stressed that the Georgian government has failed to align with the people’s European aspirations.
He also highlighted the importance of conducting October 26 elections in line with European standards, while noting that pluralism and democracy extend beyond just elections. Mikser expressed hope that Georgia will live up to its obligations.
“We have great hope that Georgia will fulfill its commitments, as it has declared,” he added.
